110 Years of Ziegler: Foundation and Early Growth (1914–1923)
In the autumn of 1914, against the backdrop of a rapidly changing industrial landscape, William H. Ziegler founded Wm. H. Ziegler Co., Inc. in Minneapolis, Minnesota. With a modest eighty-square-foot office as his base of operations, Ziegler embarked on a mission that would define the company for generations to come: to revolutionize the heavy equipment industry by prioritizing customer service, innovation, and reliability.
A Vision for Excellence
William Ziegler came to the venture with a wealth of experience. Having worked for six years with the Chicago & Northwestern Railway Company and another nine years at the Peteler Car Company, Ziegler understood the complexities of machinery and logistics. He also recognized inefficiencies in the prevailing business model, where manufacturers sold equipment directly to customers without maintaining inventories or offering after-sales support. This created significant delays, limited parts availability, and a glaring absence of service options for buyers.
Driven by a desire to solve these problems, Ziegler established one of the first businesses in the area to stock heavy machinery, maintain an inventory of essential parts, and offer comprehensive service. His motto, “Sell the best equipment, provide the best service,” became a guiding principle for the fledgling company.
Challenges and Early Success
Ziegler’s timing was both fortuitous and challenging. The onset of World War I in 1914 increased demand for heavy equipment as the nation ramped up production for military and industrial needs. However, supply chain disruptions and economic uncertainty made it difficult for businesses to thrive. Despite these obstacles, Ziegler’s commitment to quality and service allowed his company to succeed where others faltered.
The company’s reputation grew quickly as it provided reliable machinery and consistent support to industries vital to the war effort, including construction and transportation. By the end of the decade, Wm. H. Ziegler Co. had established itself as a trusted name in the region, setting the stage for expansion and diversification in the years to follow.
Building a Legacy
Beyond his business acumen, William Ziegler’s leadership style and values left an indelible mark on the company. His insistence on maintaining high standards, fostering strong relationships with clients, and addressing customer needs promptly laid the foundation for what would become one of the most successful heavy equipment dealerships in the United States.
By 1923, as the company approached its tenth anniversary, Wm. H. Ziegler Co. had not only survived its early years but thrived in a competitive market. Its success was a testament to the foresight, determination, and customer-first philosophy of its founder.
