Pioneering Urban Development with Precision and Passion
UrbanEdge Solutions & Supply LLC, established in 2024 by Ryan Kniefel and Travis Simon, is redefining urban infrastructure through a blend of seasoned expertise, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to quality. Based in Minnesota, UrbanEdge focuses on delivering high-quality construction services tailored for smaller-scale civil projects that require precision and innovation.
Ryan Kniefel’s journey in construction began with landscaping in high school, leading to a degree in Construction Management from Minnesota State University, Mankato. His career took him through various roles in the industry, starting with managing significant projects, then he progressed from an Estimator/PM to Director of Project Management. His focus was on supporting the Project management team while estimating for the structures division, emphasizing control and efficiency.
Travis Simon, with his roots in residential construction, brought extensive field experience to UrbanEdge. Starting with concrete and framing in the late ’90s, he evolved into a superintendent at a major firm handling projects up to $50 million before joining the same large contractor. His shift to operations management there honed his skills in project execution and team leadership.
The inception of UrbanEdge was spurred by the founders’ realization of the potential in smaller, more agile companies to meet market needs more effectively. After years of working long hours for larger corporations, they identified an opportunity to leverage their network and experience for a venture that promised a better work-life balance and client service. By April 2024, UrbanEdge was ready to tackle its first projects, focusing on trail developments and retaining walls, demonstrating their capability across diverse construction tasks in the civil division.
A key to UrbanEdge’s early success has been its partnership with Ziegler CAT, a leading equipment provider. Both founders have shared numerous experiences that highlight why this partnership was pivotal:
- Unmatched Service: “Ziegler’s service is second to none,” Ryan Kniefel notes, “When we needed parts for our 299, they were at our door within hours, not days. That kind of turnaround is critical in our line of work.” They recall a time when a machine’s front plate needed replacement; Ziegler not only delivered the part but also had their technician on-site within two hours, ensuring the project stayed on schedule.
- Quality Equipment: Travis Simon adds, “We chose Ziegler CAT because, in our experience, it’s not just about buying equipment; it’s about investing in solutions that keep you working. Ziegler provides that with their machines.” One memorable instance was when they first rented a compactor from Ziegler for a project. The machine’s performance and reliability were so impressive that they decided to make it one of their first purchases, confident in its long-term benefits.
- Support for Small Businesses: “What impresses me most is that even as a small company, we’re treated like a priority,” says Ryan. “Ziegler understands our position and supports us like we’re one of their biggest customers.” This was evident when they were still in their startup phase, and Ziegler provided them with a loaner machine while their own was being serviced, ensuring no project delays.
- Personal Touch: Travis elaborates, “Our Ziegler reps have been incredibly supportive. They’ve helped us find used equipment at a good price and when something didn’t work out, he personally made sure it was replaced. It’s not just business; it feels like we’re part of a team.” They recall a project where they needed a sweeper attachment urgently; Their rep not only sourced it quickly but also delivered it himself in his truck.
- Adapting to Needs: Another story Ryan shares is about how Ziegler adapted to their needs. “We were looking into GPS for grading, and Ziegler not only supplied the equipment but also helped us get trained over the phone, ensuring we could use it effectively on our projects.”
- Beyond the Sale: Urban Edge has benefited from Ziegler’s commitment to ongoing support. When they faced a challenge with a machine’s smart grade system, Ziegler’s team was there to troubleshoot over the phone, ensuring Travis could complete a trail project with the precision needed.
UrbanEdge aims to grow sustainably, the company’s strategy includes:
- Prudent Expansion: Learning from industry missteps, they are focused on controlled growth, ensuring they do not outpace their capabilities or lose their focus on quality.
- Technological Adoption: Embracing technologies like GPS for precise grading and smart systems for operational efficiency to stay ahead in project execution.
- Community and Relationship Building: Continuing to nurture relationships with clients, staff, and partners, viewing each as integral to their success.
UrbanEdge stands as a beacon for what can be achieved when experience meets entrepreneurial spirit. Ryan Kniefel and Travis Simon have not just built a company but are emphasizing quality, partnership, and innovation. Their partnership with Ziegler illustrates how crucial the right alliances can be in realizing a vision for a business that’s about more than just construction—it’s about building a legacy.
